Stocking Density

The real question isn’t ‘how many fish can I have,’ it’s ‘how much fish weight can my pond support,’ which is what stocking density actually measures.

Why Fish Count Is Misleading

Ten fingerlings and ten full-grown adults are wildly different loads on the same pond. Stocking plans need to account for what fish will weigh once grown, not their size at purchase.

A Rule of Thumb

Stocking density limits depend on filtration and aeration as much as pond size, so two identical-sized ponds can have very different safe limits.

The Slow-Motion Problem

Overstocking rarely happens on purpose. A pond that ran fine for a year can start showing problems purely because the same fish grew, not because anything was added.
