Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) answers one specific question: how much feed does it take to produce one unit of fish weight gain? Lower is better.
The Formula
FCR = total feed weight given ÷ total weight gained. An FCR of 1.5 means it took 1.5 kg of feed to add 1 kg of fish.
Why It’s Worth Tracking
Feed is usually the largest ongoing cost for small-scale and commercial farmers. A rising FCR over time can flag overfeeding, poor feed quality, or a health issue, often before it becomes an expensive problem.
A Counterintuitive Point
A more expensive, higher-protein feed can sometimes produce a lower (better) FCR, meaning less feed is needed overall despite the higher price per bag.
