Winterizing

Preparing a pond for cold weather. A rough seasonal checklist:

  • Reduce feeding as water temperature drops (fish digest slower in cold water)
  • Keep a section of surface ice-free for gas exchange in freezing climates
  • Trim back and remove dying pond plants before they decay in the water
  • Check pump placement, some need to run through winter, others should be raised or removed

Skipping this isn’t usually fatal on its own, but it stacks the odds against a pond during the hardest months of the year.
