Polyculture

The Idea

Polyculture means raising more than one species together in the same pond, chosen so they use different parts of the food chain rather than competing directly.

Why Farmers Do It

Done well, it can improve overall pond productivity without needing more space, since different species feed at different levels (surface, mid-water, bottom). It also spreads risk: a problem affecting one species doesn’t necessarily wipe out the whole pond.
