Effluent is the water discharged out of a pond or aquaculture system, carrying whatever waste and nutrients it picked up along the way.
Why It’s a Bigger Deal at Scale
For a backyard pond, effluent is rarely a concern. For commercial operations, discharging nutrient-heavy effluent into natural waterways is often regulated, since it can trigger algae blooms downstream.
The Small-Scale Version
Even a backyard pond’s drained water during a water change carries nutrients, which is why it’s often better used to water plants than sent straight down a drain.
