Quarantine

Quarantine means keeping a new fish in a separate tank or container for a few weeks before adding it to an established pond.

The Problem It Solves

A fish can look completely healthy while carrying a parasite or disease that hasn’t shown symptoms yet. Quarantine gives problems time to surface before they can spread to an entire pond.

How Long

Two to four weeks is a common range, long enough for most common issues like ich to appear if they’re present.

The Mistake Most People Make

Skipping quarantine because a fish came from a trusted source. Even reputable sellers occasionally have sick stock, and quarantine costs little compared to what an outbreak in an established pond costs.
