Water Temperature

Why It’s Foundational

Water temperature drives fish metabolism, appetite, and how much oxygen the water can hold, all at once. Fish are cold-blooded, so their whole biology speeds up or slows down with it.

Practical Effects

Warmer water holds less dissolved oxygen right when fish need more of it (higher metabolism). Sudden temperature swings, more than the absolute number, are what stress fish most, which is why acclimating fish slowly when moving them between water sources matters.
