Predation

Common Predators

Herons, raccoons, and cats are the most common threats to backyard ponds. Herons in particular can empty a pond of smaller fish in a single visit.

Protection Strategies

Netting, decoy herons (mixed results), motion-activated deterrents, and simply giving fish somewhere to hide, like plants or a shelf, are the main approaches. Pond depth also matters: shallow ponds are far easier for predators to work.
