What It Is
Tiny floating animals, mostly too small to see individually, that live in pond water and feed on algae and bacteria.
Why It Matters
In natural and lightly stocked ponds, zooplankton is a real part of the food chain, especially for young fish. A pond that supports a healthy zooplankton population often has more stable, naturally clearer water than one that doesn’t.
Practical Note
Heavy chemical treatments aimed at algae can wipe out zooplankton along with it, which sometimes makes water quality worse in the following weeks rather than better.
