Guideline for Farmers: How to Use the Pearson Square Feed Formulation Tool
The Pearson Square method is one of the easiest ways for Tilapia and Catfish farmers to make balanced feed at home. Follow these simple steps to get accurate results. You can use the small calculator below the steps.
1. Know your two ingredients
You only need two main ingredients:
One low-protein ingredient — examples: Maize bran (8–12%), Rice bran (7–12%), Wheat pollard (14–17%)
Choose ingredients that are available and affordable in your area.
2. Enter the total amount of feed you want to mix
Common examples: 50 kg, 100 kg, 150 kg. The calculator will divide the mix correctly for the total weight you choose.
3. Enter the protein percentage of each ingredient
Use the typical protein values farmers use:
If you are not sure, choose the middle value (example: maize bran → 10%).
4. Enter the required protein level for your fish
Choose the correct target for your fish and their stage:
African Catfish — Fingerlings: 35–42% | Grower: 28–32%
5. Click “Calculate Mix”
The tool will show how many kilograms of the high-protein and low-protein ingredient you need. These will add up to the total weight entered.
6. Mix the ingredients thoroughly
After you get the results:
• Spread on a clean plastic sheet or cement floor.
• Mix until the feed looks even (all the same color and texture).
• Add a binder (for example cassava flour) if you will pelletize.
• Make pellets or use the feed as mash.
7. Store the feed properly
To keep feed fresh:
• Store in a cool, dry room.
• Avoid contact with rodents or damp floors.
• Use within 2–3 weeks when possible.
Pick two ingredients (or enter protein numbers). The calculator gives kg for each ingredient to reach the target protein.
